Goalies David Leggio, Brandon Maxwell Complete U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team

Goalies David Leggio and Brandon Maxwell have been added to the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, and the 25-man roster is now complete. The organization announced on Thursday that Europe-based professionals Leggio and Maxwell will join Ryan Zapolski as Team USA’s goalies in PyeongChang. All three played for Team USA at November’s Deutschland Cup in Germany. Leggio has been with EHC München the last three seasons after playing for six American Hockey League teams from 2007-08 through 2014-15. Maxwell has been playing for BK Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. He has played in that country for parts of the last four seasons. Team USA’s Olympic schedule is set for PyeongChang. Cavaliers’ Isaiah Thomas Fined $20,000 For Clotheslining Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Isaiah Thomas was fined $20,000 for clotheslining Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins in the third quarter of a 28-point loss Monday. Kiki VanDeWeghe, the NBA’s executive vice president for basketball operations, announced the fine Wednesday. Thomas was issued a flagrant-two foul for the play — which came with 6:47 left in the third quarter — drawing an automatic ejection. He apologized to Wiggins for striking him in the jaw/neck area, and said after the game that he was trying to go for the steal. Thomas has also picked up three technical fouls already (in only three games played), costing him $2,000 per foul. ...Read more

Seattle Seahawks Fire Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell

The Seattle Seahawks have fired offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, according to reports. Bevell spent the last seven seasons heading up the Seattle offense, and was told of the team’s decision to let him go on Tuesday night. This past season, Seattle ranked 15th in total offense, with quarterback Russell Wilson leading the team in passing and rushing. The Seahawks, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2011, had only four rushing touchdowns all season, which tied for last in the NFL. Seattle did lead the league in rushing three seasons ago and was in the top 10 in that category frequently under Bevell. ...Read more

Carolina Panthers Fire Offensive Coordinator Mike Shula And Quarterbacks Coach Ken Dorsey

The Carolina Panthers have fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey, the team announced Tuesday. Shula has been with Carolina for the last seven years, spending his first two seasons with the team as the quarterbacks coach before becoming offensive coordinator in 2013. Dorsey has also been with the squad over the last seven seasons, serving as a scout for the first two years of his tenure and quarterbacks coach over the last five. This season the Panthers were fourth in the league in rushing; however, the team struggled in the passing game, averaging just 192.3 yards, which was the 28th in the league this year. ...Read more

Chicago Bears Introduce Matt Nagy As Their New Head Coach

The Chicago Bears’ general manager, Ryan Pace, has named Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, 39, their new head coach. Nagy was the sixth and final NFL assistant to interview with Pace. The two spoke on Sunday, a day after the Chiefs’ upset loss to the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Nagy will be the sixth current NFL head coach to have been an assistant under Reid.  The Bears’ new head coach was introduced at a Halas Hall news conference on Wednesday. ...Read more

Andy Murray Aims For A Wimbledon Return After Having Hip Surgery In Melbourne

Three-time grand slam champion Andy Murray has undergone hip surgery and is hoping to return to action in time for this year’s Wimbledon. The 30-year-old, who has not played a competitive match for six months and last week withdrew from the Australian Open, posted an update on Facebook. “Today I underwent successful right hip surgery at the St Vincent Hospital in Melbourne,” Murray said. “I’d like to thank Dr John O’Donnell and all of the staff for looking after me. I look forward to returning to competitive tennis during the grasscourt season.”  Murray said he can get himself back to “95 per cent of my best”. “I believe that’s enough to compete at the highest level,” he added. “No question.” Murray, who ended 2016 as world No.1, has slipped to 19th in the rankings. ...Read more

Figure Skater Adam Rippon Is First Openly Gay U.S. Man To Ever Qualify For Winter Olympics

Adam Rippon made history on Sunday when he was named as one of the three male figure skaters who will represent the United States next month at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Not only is he the oldest American figure skating Olympic rookie since 1936, Rippon became the first openly gay man to compete for the United States in the Winter Olympics. Rippon was in second place in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships when he fell to fourth place on Saturday after falling on his opening quad jump in his free skate, then missing two triples late in the program. The committee, however, decided to select Rippon (over Ross Miner, who finished in second place) because Rippon has a better track record. This was Rippon’s third attempt at making the Olympic team — he placed fifth at the nationals in 2010 and then eighth in 2014.  ...Read more

Matt Ryan Leads Falcons To 26-13 Playoff Win Over Rams

While the Rams hosted their first NFL playoff game in Los Angeles since 1986, they quickly fell behind 13-0, never led and lost 26-13 to the Falcons. Atlanta, as the sixth seed, will play at Philadelphia next week.  The defending NFC champions would not be denied, holding the Rams offense to 13 points and forcing two turnovers on special teams against the NFL’s best special teams unit. Jacksonville Jaguars Beat Buffalo Bills 10-3 In Playoff Win

The Jacksonville Jaguars outplayed the Buffalo Bills 10-3 to advance to the AFC Divisional Round. The Buffalo Bills’ offense helped send the Jaguars to playoffs as Blake Bortles completed 12-of-23 passes for 87 yards . On the Jaguars’ first seven possessions, Jacksonville punted six times and gained only 110 total yards. Bortles had more rushing yards (88) than passing yards Sunday. The table was set for the Bills’ first playoff win since 1995, but quarterback Tyrod Taylor was not able to take advantage. In what should prove to be his final game in a Bills uniform, Taylor and the Buffalo offense came up short in the 10-3 loss to Jacksonville. ...Read more

NY Islanders Sign Defenseman Scott Mayfield To Five-Year Contract Extension

The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Scott Mayfield to a five-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season. The deal announced Thursday has an average annual value of $1.45 million . The 25-year-old Mayfield has two goals and eight assists in a career-high 29 games this season. He led the team with 35 penalty minutes before Thursday night’s game at Philadelphia.
