Oakland A’s Sean Manaea Throws First No-Hitter Of 2018 Against Red Sox

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea threw the first no-hitter of the 2018 MLB season Saturday against the Red Sox. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hanley Ramirez grounded into a fielder’s choice, completing Manaea’s no-hit bid and a 3-0 Oakland win. It’s the first time Boston has been no-hit since April 22, 1993, and the first no-no thrown by an A’s pitcher since Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010.  Manaea completed the feat in a tidy 136 minutes. Cincinnati Reds Fire Manager Bryan Price After 3-15 Start

The Reds fired Bryan Price on Thursday after their 3-15 start. Price was in his fifth season leading the rebuilding team, which has relied on rookies more than any other team in the majors during his tenure. The Reds have lost at least 94 games in each of the last three seasons while finishing last in the NL Central. Bench coach Jim Riggleman will manage the team on an interim basis. The Reds are coming off back-to-back shutout losses in Milwaukee, the first time they were blanked in consecutive games since 2015. Price was given the job of leading the Reds during a massive overhaul. They were 279-387 under Price, who got the job when Dusty Baker was fired after the 2013 season. ...Read more

Erin Popovich, Wife Of Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich, Dies At 67

The San Antonio Spurs announced that Erin Popovich, the wife of coach Gregg Popovich, passed away on Wednesday. “With deep regret the San Antonio Spurs announce that Erin Popovich, wife of Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich, passed away earlier today,” the statement read. “Erin and Gregg were married for four decades and were blessed with two children and two grandchildren.” According to the San Antonio Express-News, Popovich died after a lengthy illness. WWE Hall Of Famer Bruno Sammartino Dies At Age 82

Professional wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino died Wednesday at the age of 82. Sammartino died peacefully with his wife and two kids by his side after dealing with health problems for the past several months. Sammartino, named The Italian Superman, caught the attention of Vince McMahon Sr. and became a professional wrestler after setting a world record in 1959 by bench-pressing 565 pounds. He became the second-ever WWE Champion in 1963 when he defeated Buddy Rogers in 48 seconds. Sammartino held onto the WWE Championship for eight years, a record that still stands today. He lost his championship to Ivan Koloff in 1971 but won it back in 1973 to become the first-ever two-time WWE Champion. The second title reign lasted more than three years. Sammartino sold out Madison Square Garden in New York 187 times, and became a color commentator for WWE in the 1980s.  He was inducted into the company’s Hall of Fame in 2013. ...Read more

Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics And New Orleans Pelicans All Take 2-0 Series Leads

The Raptors, Celtics and Pelicans all won in their respective series, and are all in command with 2-0 leads. The Raptors won against the Wizards 130-119 to take a 2-0 series lead for the first time in franchise history. DeMar DeRozan led the way with 37 points. In their second game, the Celtics followed suit, beating the Bucks 120-106 to go up 2-0 in their series. In the Pelicans shocked the Blazers 111-102 to steal yet another win on the road to take their own 2-0 lead in the series. 76ers And Mavericks Headed To China For NBA China Game 2018

The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA China Games 2018. The Mavericks and Sixers will meet twice, on Oct. 5 in Shanghai and Oct. 8 in Shenzhen. This will be the first time the Mavericks and Sixers play in China. The 25th and 26th NBA games in China will feature Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons against Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr. The Mavericks recently changed their Chinese name to translate to “Lone Ranger Heroes” since their Mavericks name in Chinese is translated as “Little Cows.”  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement, “the Mavericks and 76ers, both playing in China for the first time, will be able to encounter firsthand the incredible support of our Chinese fans and bond with one another through projects and events in the local community.” ...Read more

Nebraska Basketball Coach Tim Miles Receives One-Year Contract Extension

After Nebraska set a school record for conference men’s basketball victories and completed a regular season with its second-most wins, head coach Tim Miles has a new one-year contract extension. Miles is 97-97 overall and 46-62 (.434) in conference play after six seasons. Miles said in a phone interview, “I’m really just thrilled to get on the floor and be working with these guys in the spring and look forward to next year.” Miles’ salary and buyout remain the same with his extension. Miles signed a seven-year contract after replacing Doc Sadler in 2012, and is set to make $2.375 million in 2018-19.  Nebraska, picked to finish 13th out of 14 Big Ten teams last season, finished 22-11 overall and fourth in the league at 13-5.  ...Read more

Veteran Steelers LB James Harrison Announces Retirement From The NFL

Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison announced on Monday that he is retiring from the NFL. Harrison made the announcement via his Instagram account. “I’ve missed way too much for way too long…and I’m done. Many thanks to my family, coaches, the fans, and everyone who played a role in my football life,” he wrote in a caption. Harrison played 15 NFL seasons, 14 of them with Pittsburgh. He recorded 84.5 sacks throughout his career, and for a time was one of the most dominant pass-rushers in the NFL. Desiree Linden Becomes First American Woman To Win Boston Marathon Since 1985

Desiree Linden endured extreme weather conditions to win Monday’s Boston Marathon, becoming the first American woman to win the event since 1985. Enduring cold temperatures, brutal winds and a constant rain, Linden finished the 26-mile, hilly New England terrain in an unofficial time of 2:39:53.  Linden had four previous top 10 finishes in the Marathon, including missing out on the top spot by just two seconds in 2011.  ...Read more

76ers Joel Embiid To Remain Sidelined For Game 2

The Philadelphia 76ers have ruled him out center Joel Embiid to return for Game 2 against the Miami Heat, as he continues to recover from an orbital bone fracture. The team made it official on Sunday with a statement on Twitter. Embiid had said on Saturday that he was optimistic about potentially playing in Game 2 or Game 3, but the team made the call to let him take a bit more time to recover. Embiid is one of the most dominant players today, and has had a tremendous season for the Sixers, averaging 22.9 points, 11 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. ...Read more
