Maryland Students To Protest Reinstatement Of Coach DJ Durkin

Students at the University of Maryland have organized a rally to be held Thursday to protest the reinstatement of football coach DJ Durkin, as well demand justice for Jordan McNair, the Maryland offensive linemen who died June 13 from heatstroke he suffered after a team workout on May 29th. The University System of Maryland’s board of regents recommended Durkin’s reinstatement and he returned to work Tuesday,  this after the board reviewed an investigative report into the culture of Durkin’s program. The third-year coach had been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 11. Maryland’s student body president, Jonathan Allen, said that students are “outraged” by the board’s decision. Allen will introduce emergency legislation at a student government association meeting Wednesday night that will call for university president Wallace Loh to fire Durkin. Loh announced Tuesday that he will retire in June, and many reports are saying that he only brought back Durkin after the board of regents threatened to fire him if he didn’t reinstate the Durkin. ...Read more

Golden State Warriors Warriors Guard Klay Thompson Sets NBA Record For Most 3-Pointers In A Game

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson broke teammate Stephen Curry’s NBA record for 3-pointers in a game with his 14th. With just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter Monday night against the Chicago Bulls, Thompson set the mark. Golden State led 92-50 at halftime, the second highest point total for a half in NBA history. Thompson has been struggling this season, and entered the game averaging 15.1 points in seven games while shooting just 13.9 percent from 3-point range. Thompson finished the Warriors’ 149-124 victory with 52 points and five rebounds. It was Thompson’s third career 50-point game. ...Read more

City Of Boston To Host Victory Parade For World Series Winners Red Sox On Wednesday

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced Monday morning that there will be a Duck Boat parade to celebrate the victory in Boston on Wednesday October 31. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Boylston Street, near Fenway Park, however as of press time there is no rally at city hall scheduled.  Late Sunday night, the Red Sox won the World Series for the fourth time in fourteen years in a 5-1 game against the L.A. Dodgers.  During a press conference Monday, Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said that no costumes with replica firearms will be permitted at the parade and cars parked in restricted areas Wednesday morning will be towed beginning at 12 a.m. Anyone attending the parade is urged to act responsibly. ...Read more

Cleveland Browns Fire Head Coach Hue Jackson, Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley After Loss To Pittsburgh

The Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson on Monday, this coming after their 33-18 to the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Browns also fired offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Jackson was hired in 2016 and has been 3-36-1 as head coach of the Browns. Team owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam stuck by Jackson after he was 1-15 in 2016 and 0-16 last season. Jackson was 2-5-1 so far this season. Senior offensive assistant Al Saunders and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams are candidates to replace Jackson on an interim basis. Saunders was 17-22 was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1986-88, and Williams was head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2001-03. ...Read more

Boston Red Sox Defeat The Los Angeles Dodgers To Win The 2018 World Series

The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-1 victory in Game 5 to bring them a World Series championship. Boston capped off a stellar year with the Championship, finishing the regular season 108-54 and in October, winning 11 of 14 games. Starter David Price pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run and struck out five, leading the Sox to clinch another championship, Boston’s fourth since 2004 and ninth in franchise history. Alex Cora became the fifth manager in history to win a World Series in their first year as manager. Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Coach Tyronn Lue After 0-6 Start

The Cleveland Cavaliers fired their coach, Tyronn Lue on Sunday. The Cavaliers are off to a 0-6 start without LeBron James, who left Cleveland this summer for the second time in his career and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent. The Cavs haven’t shown any progress under Lue and the team decided it was time for a change before the situation worsened, said many sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.  Lue brought the Cavaliers to an NBA title in 2016, and helped the team to four straight Finals. Assistant coach Damon Jones also was fired, according to sources. 41-year-old Lue has three years left on a five-year, $35 million contract. Minnesota Twins Hire Former Tampa Bay Rays Outfielder Rocco Baldelli As New Manager

On Thursday, the Minnesota Twins announced that former MLB outfielder Rocco Baldelli is the team’s next manager. Baldelli replaces Paul Molitor, who was fired earlier this month after four seasons with the team. The Twins finished second in the AL Central in 2018 with a 78–84 record, 13 games behind the Cleveland Indians. Baldelli, 37, reportedly also interviewed for the Blue Jays and Rangers jobs before being hired by the Twins. He spent the 2018 season with the Tampa Bay Rays as the Major League Field Coordinator, and was the team’s first base coach the previous three seasons. As a player, Baldelli spent eight years in the majors, mostly with the Rays. He finished third in Rookie of the Year voting in 2003 before being forced to retire at age 29 in 2010 because of mitochondrial channelopathy, a fatigue-causing disease. ...Read more

NFL Fires Field Official Hugo Cruz For Performance-Related Issues

The NFL announced they have fired field official Hugo Cruz, for performance reasons and not meeting the standard over a sustained period of time. Cruz’s firing marks the first midseason firing of an official in the Super Bowl era. Cruz had been with the league since 2015, but missed a blatant false start late in the second quarter in Week 6’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns. While it was said that this particular incident did not lead to Cruz’s dismissal and no other details were disclosed, the high-profile nature of the missed call seems to have been a contributing factor of Cruz not meeting the high standards of officiating. The NFL Referees Association plans to file a grievance on behalf of Cruz over his dismissal, according to multiple sources.  ...Read more

Red Sox Beat Dodgers 4-2 In Game 2 To Take 2-0 World Series Lead

Boston pitcher David Price earned his second postseason victory in a row Wednesday night, pitching six innings allowing only 3 hits which brought brought the Boston Red Sox the win in Game 2 of the 2018 World Series. RBI leader J.D. Martinez broke a fifth-inning tie with a two-run single that sent Boston to a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox now lead the series 2-0. Game 3 is Friday in Los Angeles. The Dodgers need a win to avoid an 0-3 deficit, one that no World Series winning team has ever come back from. ...Read more

Denver Broncos Release QB Chad Kelly After Trespassing Arrest

The Denver Broncos released quarterback Chad Kelly on Wednesday following his arrest for allegedly trespassing in a Colorado home. Broncos president of football operations and general manager John Elway said in a news release that “this was a decision that we made as an organization. After reviewing all the information…we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do.”  Kelly’s release from the Broncos followed his arrest early Tuesday in which police responded to a report of a man standing outside a residence at around 1:17 a.m.; a couple and their child were inside the home when Kelly, 24, allegedly entered and sat on the couch next to the mother, mumbling incoherently. The home’s occupant chased the man out of the residence and police eventually found Kelly, who matched the description provided by the homeowner. Kelly was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespass.  Kelly was drafted by the Broncos in the seventh and final round of the 2017 NFL Draft; he missed all of last season with an injury.
