New York Woman Charged With Laundering Money To Help ISIS

U.S. prosecutors said Thursday that they had charged a Long Island, New York woman with laundering more than $85,000 in fraudulently obtained money through Bitcoin to help Islamic State. Zoobia Shahnaz, 27, was arrested Wednesday on charges of bank fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Shahnaz pleaded not guilty on Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kathleen Tomlinson in New York. Prosecutors said that between March and July of this year, Shahnaz obtained a loan and multiple credit cards by making false representations to financial institutions, and used them to buy Bitcoin. FCC Votes to Dismantle Net-Neutrality Rules

The Federal Communications Commission voted on Thursday to dismantle landmark rules regulating the businesses that connect consumers to the internet, granting broadband companies the power to potentially reshape Americans’ online experiences. The agency scrapped the so-called net neutrality regulations that prohibited broadband providers from blocking websites or charging for higher-quality service or certain content. Los Angeles Angels Acquire Ian Kinsler In Trade With Detroit Tigers

The Los Angeles Angels filled a big hole at second base, acquiring Ian Kinsler from the Detroit Tigers for two minor leaguers Wednesday night. Detroit received 18-year-old right-hander Wilkel Hernandez and 23-year-old outfielder Troy Montgomery in the trade. The 35-year-old Kinsler hit .236 with 22 home runs and 52 RBIs in 139 games last season for the Tigers. He is due to earn $11 million next season in the final year of his contract. ...Read more

Milwaukee Bucks forward Mirza Teletovic will be sidelined as a result of pulmonary emboli in both lungs, Bucks officials announced Thursday, December 14th. According to the Bucks, Teletovic’s condition was discovered when consulting with Bucks team physicians after he experienced unusual fatigue earlier this week. Disney Buys 21st Century Fox Films As Part Of Major $52 Billion Deal

The Walt Disney Company announced Thursday it will acquire entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox in a deal worth more than $52 billion in stock. As part of the all-stock purchase, Disney will acquire the 20th Century Fox film and television conglomerate and assume nearly $14 billion in Fox debt. The total value of 21st Century Fox’s assets is estimated at $66.1 billion, Disney said. Under the agreement, the Fox Broadcasting Network and its stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, Fox Sports 1 and 2, the Big Ten Network and Fox’s Hollywood film lot will spin off into a separate company, which is expected to have revenues totaling about $10 billion. ...Read more

Tavis Smiley Responds To Sexual Misconduct Allegations And Suspension From PBS

Talk show host and broadcast journalist Tavis Smiley is the latest high profile man to be accused of sexual misconduct involving women that they’ve worked with or associated with professionally. PBS issued a statement on Wednesday in which they claim to have received “credible allegations” of misconduct following an investigation launched earlier this year.  The investigation ultimately led the network to the decision to suspend Smiley and his program indefinitely. Shortly after news of his suspension broke, Smiley took to social media to respond to the allegations. US Ambassador Nikki Haley To Present “Irrefutable Evidence” On Iran

US Ambassador Nikki Haley will present “irrefutable evidence” that Iran has tried to cover up violations of international obligations, the US mission said Wednesday. House and Senate GOP leaders forged an agreement Wednesday on a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s tax laws, paving the way for final votes next week to slash taxes for businesses and give many Americans modest tax cuts starting next year. Top GOP aides said lawmakers had reached an agreement in principle on the final package. Broadcasting legend Bob Costas has been named the 2018 Ford C. Frick Award winner. According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Costas will be recognized during the Hall of Fame awards presentation on July 28, 2018 during Hall of Fame weekend. Miami Marlins Trade Marcell Ozuna To Cardinals

Miami agreed to trade Marcell Ozuna — their Gold Glove, Silver Slugger left fielder — to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. He is the third All-Star to be traded in six days. The Cardinals are reportedly sending four prospects to the Marlins, including right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara. Ozuna is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2019 season. For the Marlins, this is another step in that offseason roster deconstruction.
