Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov Both Suspended 10 Days For Brawl At UFC 229

UFC fighters Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor are being suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for a brawl that occurred after their lightweight title fight last weekend in Las Vegas Letters were sent informing both fighters that they will be suspended for at least 10 days effective Oct. 15, commission executive Bob Bennett said Thursday. A commission investigation is pending and the panel can extend the temporary suspension when it meets Oct. 24. Nurmagomedov and McGregor could also appeal Bennett’s executive action at that time. Earlier this week, Nurmagomedov’s $2 million for the fight was withheld by the commission pending the outcome of the investigation; McGregor received his $3 million purse. UFC President Dana White also said three members of Nurmagomedov’s camp were detained by police but released, because McGregor refused to press criminal charges. White said the UFC might strip the lightweight title from Nurmagomedov, as well.  ...Read more

St. Louis Cardinals Agree To 1-Year Deal With Veteran Adam Wainwright

On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright has agreed to a one-year deal. The 37-year-old Wainwright has been with St. Louis since making his big league debut in 2005. Wainwright made just eight starts this season because of hamstring and elbow problems, going 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA, but he pitched four times in September as the Cardinals made an unsuccessful bid for a postseason spot. Wainwright is a three-time All-Star and is fifth on the Cardinals’ career list with 148 wins and second with 1,623 strikeouts. He was a closer for the Cardinals when they won the World Series in 2006.  Wainwright went 20-9 with a 2.38 ERA in 2014, but he’s posted a 4.54 ERA over the four seasons since. ...Read more

Hurricane Michael Weakens To Tropical Storm As It Heads Across Georgia

The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Michael weakened to a tropical storm Thursday, with 50 mph winds as it moved across Georgia. The eye of the storm was 30 miles west of Augusta, Ga., as of the NHC’s 5 a.m. EDT update. The storm was moving northeast at 21 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Yesterday when it made landfall in the Florida Panhandle, Michael sustained 155 mph winds, 2 mph shy of a Category 5 storm. Storm surge watches are in effect from the Ocracoke Inlet to Duck in North Carolina. Michael is expected to head northeast through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia on Thursday as a tropical storm. However, forecasters warn that Michael could intensify again when it reaches the Atlantic Ocean late Thursday or early Friday. Additionally, the NHC forecasts up to 7 inches for eastern Georgia and the Carolinas up to southern New England. Isolated areas could get 9 inches and life-threatening flash floods, and isolated tornadoes are possible Thursday in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. ...Read more

Dow Drops More Than 800 Point In Worst Day Since February

U.S. stocks slumped to close sharply lower Wednesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than 800 points and the S&P 500 had its worst day since February as technology stocks went into freefall. The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 831.83 points, logging its worst one-day drop since February. Meanwhile the S&P 500 index lost 94.66 points, falling for its fifth straight day, the longest losing streak since November 2016.  Market action has been adversely affected by higher bond yields and interest rates, both of which could signal a new phase in post-crisis markets that have enjoyed a protracted period of ultra-low yields.  ...Read more

Netflix Renews ‘Ozark’ For Season 3

On Wednesday, Netflix and Ozark star Jason Bateman announced that the original series has been renewed for a third season. Bateman tweeted, “I’m happy for me, but concerned for Marty – it’s official OZARK 3 is on the way.”  Bateman stars as Marty Byrde, a family man and money launderer for a Mexican drug cartel. The second season of Ozark premiered at the end of August and found the Byrde family, in particlar Wendy (Laura Linney), diving further into the world of crime. Jordana Spiro, Janet McTeer, and Julia Garner also star on the series. Ozark received 5 nominations at last month’s Emmys, including Best Actor and Best Director for Bateman.  Ozark season 3 has yet to confirm a release date, but is expected to arrive around late summer or early autumn in 2019. ...Read more

Brooks Koepka Voted PGA Tour Top Player Of The Year

U.S. Open and PGA champion Brooks Koepka was awarded the Jack Nicklaus Award trophy as the PGA Tour player of the year. Koepka is the sixth player in the last six years to win the award, the longest streak of different winners since PGA Tour players began voting on the award in 1990. Koepka’s award was presented at The Bear’s Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, the home course of Nicklaus. Koepka received the award during his one week at home. After the Ryder Cup, he played the Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews. He leaves this weekend for the CJ Cup in South Korea, followed by the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. ...Read more

Boston Red Sox Defeat New York Yankees To Advance To ALCS

The Boston Red Sox eliminated the New York Yankees from the 2018 postseason on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium with a 4-3 win to advance to the ALCS. Red Sox starter Rick Porcello allowed just four hits and one run in five innings, and the Red Sox bullpen allowed just one hit over the final four innings to earn the victory. Boston’s Game 4 win completed a 3-1 series victory in the American League Division Series. Taylor Swift won three awards at the 2018 American Music Awards, including artist of the year. Those three AMAs have now made her the most decorated musician ever in AMA history. Swift made her first awards show appearance at the AMAs in three years with her performance of “I Did Something Bad.” Tracee Ellis Ross hosted the American Music Awards, in which fans vote for the winners. The show aired Tuesday on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles; Swift, Cardi B, Post Malone, Camila Cabello were also among the performers. Cardi B, who was tied with Drake for the most AMA nominations, won the first award of the night for favorite rap/hip-hop artist.
