‘Venom’ Tops ‘A Star Is Born’ For October’s Opening Weekend Box Office

The movie “Venom” is expected to set an opening weekend record for October with an estimated $80 million from 4,250 theaters. Venom, which stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock (aka the eponymous anti-hero Venom), will beat the last October record-holder, “Gravity,” which debuted in 2013 to $55.7 million. Directed by Ruben Fleischer and also starring with Michelle Williams alongside Hardy, “Venom” earned $32.75 million on Friday. The weekend’s other major opener, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born,” is expected to make $42 million from 3,686 domestic sites. Warner Bros.’ remake has already earned $6.0 million abroad from 4,590 screens. “A Star Is Born” premiered to rave reviews at the Venice International Film Festival and marked Cooper’s directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Will Fetters. ...Read more

Running Back Isaiah Crowell Sets NY Jets Franchise Rushing Record In Win Over Denver Broncos

New York Jets running back Isaiah Crowell delivered the best rushing day in the franchise’s history. Crowell rushed for a career-high 219 yards in a 34-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.  This included a 77-yard touchdown that launched the Jets towards 21-points scored in the second quarter. Crowell set the franchise mark on just 15 carries for an NFL-record. Two weeks ago, Crowell caused controversy with his coach with a crude touchdown celebration; but his time he simply tossed the ball away and celebrated with teammates. Brawl Ensues After Khabib Nurmagomedov Submits Conor McGregor At UFC 229

Conor McGregor tapped out in the fourth round of his comeback fight at UFC 229 against Khabib Nurmagomedov, who then climbed over the cage and set off a brawl by scuffling with another fighter in McGregor’s corner on Saturday night. The mayhem occurred after McGregor got caught in a choke by Nurmagomedov (27-0), who defended his lightweight belt by defeating McGregor. who infamously attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov. However, Nurmagomedov stepped away from McGregor and immediately pointed at his corner, shouting and throwing his mouthpiece. The men in McGregor’s corner appeared to respond with taunts, and Nurmagomedov climbed over the fence and fought with Dillon Danis, a Bellator welterweight who trains with McGregor. Meanwhile, two men apparently from Nurmagomedov’s entourage entered the cage and sucker-punched McGregor, who defended himself before security got involved. Nurmagomedov and McGregor both left the ring before the championship belt could be presented to Nurmagomedov. Both fighters’ purses will be withheld pending an investigation by the Nevada Athletic Commission.  ...Read more

20 Killed After Limousine Crash In Upstate New York

Twenty people died on Saturday after a limousine crashed in upstate New York. Safety officials are calling this the nation’s worst road accident in nearly a decade. The crash occurred in the historic town of Schoharie, about 45 minutes west of Albany. According to Christopher Fiore, first deputy superintendent of the New York State Police, a 2001 Ford Excursion limousine failed to stop at an intersection with State Route 30 and crashed into a 2015 Toyota Highlander parked near the Apple Barrel Country Store. All 18 people in the limo, including the driver, died. Two pedestrians who were struck also lost their lives. “This is the most deadly transportation accident in this country since February of 2009,” National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters. The names of the victims have not been released because next of kin were being notified, the New York State Police said in a statement. Their bodies were transported to the Albany Medical Center, where autopsies were being conducted on each person. ...Read more

Ham, Ground Beef Recalled In Two Separate Outbreaks

Federal health officials said Thursday that one person has died and four were hospitalized in an outbreak of listeria linked to cured hams from North Carolina, The ham recall affects 89,000 pounds of ham products made by Johnston County Hams, Inc. in Smithfield, North Carolina. The ham maker has recalled the hams, which were produced from April 3, 2017 through October 2, 2018,. The CDC has recommended that consumers “return them to the store for a refund or throw them away. Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell recalled Johnston County Hams products,”. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said they were distributed in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Virginia. Republicans Hope To Confirm Kavanaugh This Weekend After Review Of FBI Report

Republicans gained confidence on Thursday that U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh would win Senate confirmation, this after two wavering lawmakers responded positively to an FBI report on accusations of sexual misconduct against the judge. The report was sent by the White House to the Senate Judiciary Committee in the middle of the night. Democrats have denounced it as a “whitewash” that was “too narrow in scope” and claimed it ignored critical witnesses. Thousands of anti-Kavanaugh protesters rallied outside the Supreme Court and entered a Senate office building, holding signs such as “Believe Survivors” and “Kava-Nope.” Depiste this, Republicans moved forward with plans for a key procedural vote on Friday and a final vote on Saturday on confirming Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. ...Read more

Kaley Cuoco To Voice Harley Quinn For Upcoming DC Universe Animated Series

The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco has a new job, and will voice the title role in the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series. CBS announced in August that The Big Bang Theory will end with its current 12th season. The actress announced the news about Harley Quinn on Wednesday, October 3, during a surprise appearance at New York Comic-Con, where DC Universe also unveiled a teaser for the show. Cuoco told the audience, “I’ve always loved animation. I did it years ago, and I haven’t been in the animation world in a while. [Harley] is so edgy. It’s obviously a very adult comedy, and with such a world-renowned character, it’s been a blast to record.” Cuoco revealed that the series will begin with her character breaking up with The Joker as she becomes the “best badass super villain that there is.” The Harley Quinn voice cast also includes Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, JB Smoove, Jason Alexander, Wanda Sykes, Tony Hale and Chris Meloni, and is expected to premiere in 2019.   ...Read more

Tina Turner Musical Is Headed To Broadway

A musical depicting the life and career of the legendary Tina Turner will be opening on Broadway this fall. The show made its debut in London’s West End, and now will be coming to Broadway in the fall of 2019. Turner shared in a statement, “bringing this musical to life on stage and working with this team has meant so much to me, I feel that it is in many ways a culmination of my career.” Tony Award nominee Adrienne Warren, who plays the titular part in the production’s London cast, is expected to reprise her role in the New York show, but official casting information has not been released. Baltimore Orioles Fire Manager Buck Showalter, Executive VP Dan Duquette After Worst Season In Team History

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter, and executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, will not return in 2019, the team announced Wednesday night. Showalter took the helm during the 2010 season, while Duquette was hired as general manager after the 2011 campaign. Showalter and Duquette both had contracts that expire at the end of October. The Orioles said in a statement, “we thank Dan and Buck for their many contributions over the past several years. Under their leadership, prior to the 2018 season and for six consecutive years, the club delivered competitive teams playing meaningful baseball into September, achieved three postseason appearances and came within four games of a World Series appearance, and won more games than any other American League club during a period spanning five of those six enjoyable seasons.”  This past season was the worst in Orioles history; Baltimore became just the fifth major league team since 1900 to lose 115 games or more in a season. ...Read more

Cristiano Ronaldo Left Off Portugal Squad For Next Few Matches Amid Rape Allegation

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left off Portugal’s national team squad for a pair of upcoming matches, the decision coming as Ronaldo deals with rape allegations against him. Ronaldo has been accused of rape by Kathryn Mayorga, who says the player assaulted her in Las Vegas in 2009. He has denied the accusation. Ronaldo was left off the squad for Portugal’s second game in the UEFA Nations League at Poland on Oct. 11, as well as a match in Glasgow against Scotland three days later. Ronaldo also missed Portugal’s first two post-World Cup matches last month, with coach Fernando Santos saying Ronaldo had only just moved to the Italian club and was still settling down there. ...Read more
