Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting Suspect Indicted On 44 Charges

According to grand jury filings on Wednesday, the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre faces 44 federal charges in the slaying of 11 worshippers during last weekend’s Shabbat services, 32 of them which are death penalty offenses. Included are 11 counts each of obstruction of the free exercise of religious belief resulting in death and use of a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence, a conviction on any of which could be punishable by death, according to the indictment. The suspect, 46 year old Robert Bowers of Baldwin, was wounded at the scene of the shooting and was brought into federal court Monday in a wheelchair. He spoke only to answer the judge’s questions. Bowers is accused of the shooting at Saturday morning services at the Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, after making anti-Semitic posts online. He also said he wanted to kill Jews during his shootout with police. Four police officers were wounded trying to apprehend Bowers, who stands accused of shooting three of the wounded officers. Minnesota Timberwolves Jimmy Butler To Sit Out Vs. Utah Jazz; Will Travel WIth Team

Minnesota Timberwolves Jimmy Butler has made it known that he wants to be traded from the team, and on Wednesday, Butler made a statement and sat himself for the Timberwolves’ game against the Utah Jazz. The Timberwolves officially listed Butler’s reason for being out as “precautionary rest” for general soreness, but insider reports are stating that Butler made the decision himself, and then informed coach Tom Thibodeau of it Wednesday morning. Rumors are circulating that this could lead to Butler sitting out for an extended period of time. The Timberwolves expect Butler to travel with them to the Bay Area when they play Golden State on Friday. In only six games this season, Butler is averaging 22.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 48 percent beyond the arc. ...Read more

Maryland Students To Protest Reinstatement Of Coach DJ Durkin

Students at the University of Maryland have organized a rally to be held Thursday to protest the reinstatement of football coach DJ Durkin, as well demand justice for Jordan McNair, the Maryland offensive linemen who died June 13 from heatstroke he suffered after a team workout on May 29th. The University System of Maryland’s board of regents recommended Durkin’s reinstatement and he returned to work Tuesday,  this after the board reviewed an investigative report into the culture of Durkin’s program. The third-year coach had been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 11. Maryland’s student body president, Jonathan Allen, said that students are “outraged” by the board’s decision. Allen will introduce emergency legislation at a student government association meeting Wednesday night that will call for university president Wallace Loh to fire Durkin. Loh announced Tuesday that he will retire in June, and many reports are saying that he only brought back Durkin after the board of regents threatened to fire him if he didn’t reinstate the Durkin. ...Read more

Barbra Streisand Sings With James Corden In Teaser Of Her Appearance On “Carpool Karaoke”

Barbra Streisand and Late Late Show host James Corden will take a musical car ride, as seen in a new teaser trailer for Thursday’s installment of Carpool Karaoke. Streisand said on Twitter Tuesday alongside the trailer, “They say there’s a first time for everything… can you believe this was my first time singing out loud in a car? Had so much fun with @jkcorden – tune in to @latelateshow Thursday night! #BarbraWalls.”  In the clip, Corden is then shocked to discover that Streisand doesn’t play music in her car. “I don’t usually put the radio on to hear music. Do you really have to hear music?” Streisand says before the duo launch into a rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from Funny Girl. Director Tyler Perry Planning To End His “Madea” Character In 2019

Filmmaker Tyler Perry says he’s retiring the character of Madea, the grandmother he first featured on screen in “I Can Do Bad All By Myself back in 1999,” and has since appeared in 10 installments, along with numerous stage shows and TV appearances. Perry says he also plans to stage a farewell tour in 2019, along with the character’s final film, “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral.” Perry said that the film was shot more than two years ago, but Perry wanted to delay the release in light of the two Madea Halloween films he made from 2016 and 2017, respectively. He’s also looking forward to working on different kinds of projects, including Acrimony, out earlier this year, and Nobody’s Fool, due out in November, both of which Perry wrote and produced. ...Read more

Boston Gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger Killed In West Virginia Prison

James “Whitey” Bulger, one of Boston’s most notorious mobsters in addition to a secret FBI informant, was killed after being transferred to a federal prison in West Virginia. Bulger, 89, was serving a sentence of life in prison, and had recently been transferred to the high-security Hazelton penitentiary in West Virginia. The cause of death has not been specified. Bulger was convicted in August 2013 of 11 murders, among other charges including racketeering, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years. Bulger was the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, as well as a FBI informant. He spent 16 years as as one of the nation’s most wanted fugitives before he was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011. Authorities found inside the apartment more than $800,000 in cash and an arsenal of weapons. He was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders stretching from Massachusetts to Florida to Oklahoma, and was sentenced to life in prison. ...Read more

President Trump Planning Executive Order To End Birthright Citizenship For Some U.S.-Born Babies

President Donald Trump said in an interview that he plans to use an executive order to end citizenship rights for babies born in the U.S. to parents who aren’t citizens. However, the idea that he could do so by executive order was immediately opposed by Democrats, legal scholars and even House Speaker Paul Ryan. Trump said, “we’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States … with all of those benefits. It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end. It’s in the process. It’ll happen … with an executive order.” However, it is doubtful that a  birthright citizenship can be ended through an executive order and without a change to the Constitution. The Constitution’s 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, says: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” ...Read more

Golden State Warriors Warriors Guard Klay Thompson Sets NBA Record For Most 3-Pointers In A Game

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson broke teammate Stephen Curry’s NBA record for 3-pointers in a game with his 14th. With just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter Monday night against the Chicago Bulls, Thompson set the mark. Golden State led 92-50 at halftime, the second highest point total for a half in NBA history. Thompson has been struggling this season, and entered the game averaging 15.1 points in seven games while shooting just 13.9 percent from 3-point range. “A Wrinkle In Time” Director Ava DuVernay Partnering With Netflix On Prince Documentary

A Wrinkle in Time and 13th director Ava DuVernay is partnering with Netflix for a feature-length documentary on the late musical icon Prince. The documentary will chronicle Prince’s entire life and career. DuVernay tweeted about the project, saying “Prince was a genius, a joy, and a jolt to the senses. He was like no other. He shattered preconceived notions, smashed boundaries, and shared his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love and great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful.” DuVernay has been working on the project for several months and she has the full cooperation of Prince’s estate. Actress Hilary Duff and boyfriend Matthew Koma shared on Instagram that their new baby girl had officially arrived. Duff shared the baby’s name, posting “Banks Violet Bair, this little bit has fully stolen our hearts! She joined our world at home on Thursday afternoon and is absolute magic” alongside a photo of the couple cradling their new addition. Duff posted several more photos of baby Banks in her Instagram Stories, sharing a snapshot showing Koma had dyed his hair pink in anticipation of the baby’s arrival.
