Nike To Air TV Ad Featuring Colin Kaepernick During NFL Season Opener

Nike Inc. is planning to air a new “Just Do It” TV ad during the opening game of the NFL’s new season Thursday that will be narrated by Colin Kaepernick.  It will also feature a number of other athletes, including Odell Beckham Jr, LeBron James and Serena Williams. The ad is to inspire people to follow their dreams and ignore those who say it can’t be done. “Calling a dream crazy is not an insult,” Kaepernick says, “It’s a compliment.”Kaepernick hasn’t played in a game since the 2016 season and has filed a grievance alleging that NFL teams colluded to keep him unsigned. Former Phillies All-Star Ryan Howard Retires From Baseball

Former Philadelphia Phillies star Ryan Howard announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday. Howard, 38, has not played in the majors since 2016 and has been a free agent since November. The former National League MVP signed minor league deals with the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies last season, but his entire major league career was spent with the Phillies.  Howard was a career .258 hitter with 382 home runs and 1,194 RBIs in his 13 seasons with the Phillies. He twice led the majors in homers and led the majors in RBIs three times during a dominant six-year stretch from 2006 to 2011, when he averaged 44 homers and 133 RBIs per season. As a rookie in 2005, Howard had 22 home runs and 63 RBIs in just 88 games and was named the NL Rookie of the Year. He was voted MVP the following season, when he led the majors with 58 homers and 149 RBIs. Howard again led the majors in homers (48) and RBIs (146) in 2008, while helping the Phillies win their first World Series title since 1980.  In 2011, he suffered a torn Achilles on the final play of the NLD and over the next five years his career was plagued by knee, foot and Achilles injuries.  ...Read more

Defending Champion Sloane Stephens Eliminated In U.S. Open Quarters

Defending champion Sloane Stephens was beaten by Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at the U.S. Open, eliminating her from the tournament. Sevastova, the No. 19 seed from Latvia, will play either Serena Williams or 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova in her first Grand Slam semifinal. Stephens said she had been battling a cold, but her biggest problem Tuesday might have been her serve. Henry Cavill To Star In The Witcher Remake For Netflix

Henry Cavill will play the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series The Witcher. “Witchers” are monster hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to fight deadly beasts. The series adaptation is based on the best-selling fantasy short stories and novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Cavill has been cast as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. The books by Sapkowski have also been adapted into video games, which have sold millions of copies worldwide.  This will be the first TV role for Cavill, since The Tudors ended in 2010. Former Cosby Show Actor Geoffrey Owens’ Speaks Out After He Was Job-Shamed For Working At Trader Joe’s

Actor Geoffrey Owens, who was a former regular on The Cosby Show, says he’s thankful for the support he has received since photos of him working a regular job at a supermarket were widely circulated. Speaking on Good Morning America and wearing his “Geoffrey” supermarket name tag, Owens said that he was “devastated” when the photos were made public, because he felt people were trying to job shame him. Owens said that he had been working at the New Jersey Trader Joe’s supermarket for 15 months “out of necessity” in between acting gigs and teaching, but that he has now quit because of the unwanted attention he has received. “It hurt, but it’s amazing,” Owens said. “There is no job that’s better than another. It may pay better, it may have better benefits, it may look better on paper. But it’s not better. Every job is worthwhile.” Owens said he had received “hints” of acting work since the story broke but that he would feel uncomfortable taking any jobs because of “this event”. ...Read more

Former Senator Jon Kyl To Replace John McCain In The Senate

On Tuesday it was reported that Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is set to appoint Former Senator Jon Kyl to the Senate seat left open by the late Sen. John McCain. Kyl is a former Republican senator for Arizona, serving three terms alongside McCain as one of the highest-ranked GOP lawmakers before retiring in 2013. He has agreed to serve until a special election can be held in 2020 but has indicated that he will not run to keep the seat at that time. Since retiring from politics, Kyl has worked as a lobbyist with Covington and Burling, representing financial service companies and pharmaceutical industries. McCain died last month after a yearlong bout with brain cancer. His widow, Cindy McCain, called Kyl a “dear friend” and expressed support for his appointment. Amazon Joins Apple As Second $1 Trillion Company

Amazon became the second company worth $1 trillion on Tuesday morning, hitting the milestone one month after Apple became the first company to do so. Early trading pushed Amazon past the $2,050.27 per share mark it needed to hit a $1 trillion valuation. Shares dipped slightly afterwards, but were still up about 1 percent on the day. Just this year so far, Amazon’s shares have surged by more than 70 percent in 2018. The company’s success has made CEO Jeff Bezos the richest man in the world by far, with a net worth of about $150 billion. In July, Amazon reported $52.9 billion in revenue during the second quarter, along with a record $2.5 billion in profit. Part of the reason for it’s success is said to be that Amazon has morphed into a powerhouse on several fronts, from entertainment to cloud services to advertising. ...Read more

Hurricane Warning Issued As Tropical Storm Gordon Aims For Gulf Coast

A weather system moving quickly toward the central U.S. Gulf Coast became a tropical storm Monday morning, bringing the threat of storm surges, strong winds and heavy rain to millions in the Southeast. Tropical Storm Gordon was about 15 miles west-southwest of Marco Island in Florida, as of Monday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50 mph and the system is moving west-northwest at 16 mph. Gordon could be near hurricane strength when it makes landfall along the central Gulf Coast. Florida Gov. Rick Scott said the biggest impact is expected to be heavy rain. At 8 p.m. on Monday, Gordon’s top sustained winds had accelerated to 60 mph, was about 385 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and was moving west-northwest at 17 mph. The weather service projected that it would turn north in the next couple of days and that it was likely to make landfall as a hurricane somewhere along the central Gulf Coast overnight Tuesday. ...Read more

One Body Recovered, 3 Still Missing After Colorado River Boat Crash

Arizona authorities say they have found the body of a woman who was among four people missing after two boats crashed on the Colorado River. Mohave County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen says 51-year-old Christi Lewis was found Monday in a section of the river that borders California and Arizona. Authorities say a boat carrying 10 people and another vessel with six people on board collided head-on Saturday night, ejecting more than a dozen people. Both boats sank and passing boaters pulled people from the water. None of the people in the two boats were wearing life vests. The search is continuing for the three other missing people. ...Read more
