California Governor Says 8,400 People Being Monitored For Coronavirus

More than 8,400 returning travelers that have entered California from Asia on commercial flights are being monitored for the coronavirus, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom. The Governor urged residents to take precautions regarding the coronavirus, while emphasizing that the risks to public health were low.  He said there was no need to declare a public health emergency, adding, “Everybody in this country is rightfully anxious about this moment. I think they should know we are meeting this moment with the kind of urgency that is necessary and I don’t want to over extend the anxiety.” The governor said that California had only received about 200 testing kits for the virus, an amount he called “simply inadequate.” But he said federal officials have promised him the state will get many more soon. ...Read more

Court Rules Trump Administration Can Withhold Funds From Sanctuary States

On Wednesday, a federal appeals court said the Trump administration can withhold funds from New York City and seven states that have declared themselves sanctuaries from federal immigration policies, setting the stage for possible U.S. Supreme Court action. The decision by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said President Trump acted within his authority when he signed an executive order in January 2017 to withhold federal funds from states that resisted helping federal efforts to enforce immigration laws. ...Read more

Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician who was depicted in the film “Hidden Figures,” died Monday, NASA said in a tweet. She was 101. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a statement:  “Ms. Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space even as she made huge strides that also opened doors for women and people of color in the universal human quest to explore space. Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of third-degree rape and a criminal sex act on Monday. After over five days of deliberation, jurors in Manhattan Supreme Court cleared Weinstein, 67, of the most serious charge against him, predatory sex assault. New York Governor Cuomo Announces Jewish Community Center Evacuated In New York After Bomb Threat

New York’s , Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the Albany Jewish Community Center in New York was evacuated and searched Sunday morning, after it and several other centers around the country received anonymous emails with vague threats that mentioned a bomb.
