VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – On June 13th, at 7:30, a two-vehicle crash happened on a Saturday night leaving seven injured; three of whom were children.

The crash took place at the oceanfront on 40th Street and Pacific Avenue in Va. Beach. One of the vehicles was on fire soon to be fully engulfed in flames. Thankfully, Petty Officer 1st Class Rodrigo Palos, from Versailles, Kentucky, was there with his two Marine comrades and ready to use their life-saving skills they learned in the service.

When they heard the crash, immediately Palos and his two comrades assessed the scene, removed two of the children through small openings in the crumpled rear and sides of the crashed vehicle. One of Palos ’ comrades noticed there was an unconscious and trapped child, so he disregarded his personal safety and reached through a broken rear window, carefully grabbing the unconscious child, and pulling her safely out of the burning vehicle. All three children were removed from the vehicle and stabilized in the case of spinal injuries

Palos noticed that there was an adult female in distress. The female had a severe bleeding head wound and apparent brain or spinal damage, so he performed a support carry to assist her away from the burning vehicle. He then treated her head wound, supported the victim’s head, and talked with her so she would remain conscious until the arrival of the Va. Beach Lifeguard Association.

“Once we heard the crash, the military training we received taught us how to respond to this type of situation,” said Palos.

Palos is a 2010 Woodford County High School graduate and is currently serving with Training Support Center Hampton Roads. He has served in the Navy for eight years and joined to be apart of something bigger than himself.

“Growing up in Versailles, I learned to always be humble,” added Palos. “Being humble has allowed me to take a step back and keep an open mind to new ideas. Serving in the Navy means I am part of something that stands for excellence. There is no other Navy in the world that is as professional, proficient, and takes care of its people like the U.S. Navy.”
