Ongoing “Holiday Lights, Recycle Right” collection drive a big success

LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 22, 2019) – The city asked people to drop off broken or unwanted holiday lights as part of the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works’ “Holiday Lights, Recycle Right” collection drive, and the public has responded in a big way.

More than 1,300 pounds of lights, extension cords, timers, light sensors and power strips have been collected in the first two months of the electronic recycling drive. The program runs through Saturday, Jan. 26, so there’s still time for people to dispose of unwanted holiday lights and accessories.

“We have been pleasantly surprised by the volume of lights that Lexington has donated so far and encourage residents to take advantage of the last week of the drive,” said Angela Poe, senior program manager with the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. “Each pound collected is a pound that will not be going into a landfill or sent to the city’s Recycling Center where it can cause equipment problems and delays.”

Collection bins are located at:

·         Broomwagon Coffee + Bikes (800 North Limestone)

·         Chevy Chase Hardware (883 East High Street)

·         Crank & Boom – Distillery District (1210 Manchester Street)
